We all begin in darkness. Within the depths of our mother’s belly, within the cradling waters of that womb, our first bed comforts us in darkness. Our eyes closed, our vision still tuned to that of inner seeing, we drift in watery nurture.

A bed of abundance, of profound fertility, in that sacred darkness we know nothing of need. Shelter, support and sustenance flow to us. Here we have no need to ask; gifts are simply given. We absorb them, drink them in, bathe in them. Resting in that comfort we know: there is nurture in the darkness.

Birthing carries us out of the womb, out of that bed of sacred darkness. We learn to recognize our needs and to requite them.  We live in the world of light, but we can still access that sacred darkness. Every night as we sink into sleep, comforted under the down of blankets in the darkness of the bedroom, we touch again that sacred womb and the comfort of that first bed.

Tonight, turn off the lights. Silence the television, the radio and the telephone. Draw a blanket quietly around you and settle into the darkness. Curl your body into the position it remembers from that first womb of comfort. Close your eyes and let your being sink into memory, nestle into comfort and drift in knowing… there is nurture in the darkness.

In the Pool of Renewal
by Jennifer L. Jacoby

Hush
Be still child
Breathe
and feel the earth
nurturing you

Hush
Be still child
Exhale
and feel the waters
cleansing you

Hush
Be still child
Inhale
and feel the breath
reviving you

Hush
Be still child
Dream
and feel the fire
inspiring you

Hush
Be still child
Be
and feel the love
that is you
